MegaMind is a nutritional supplement crafted by Source Naturals, a company that was founded in 1982 by Ira Goldberg, their current CEO. Its mission was fairly simply: crafting holistic and herbally based formulas that could help individuals optimize health. MegaMind is one of their cogitative enhancement formulas, which is geared toward helping users keep and augment their memory, focus, alertness and learning abilities. While some products in the Source Naturals product line have been highly successful, others have not been as effective, so it’s really important, even with a line like this one, to take a hard look at a product’s formula to get a true idea of where its abilities lie.

The formula used in MegaMind in many ways reads like the label for a high performance multivitamin that can help increase overall nutritional health, due to the fact that it contains so many vitamins and minerals. That said, we were glad to see that it contains three very important vitamins for maintaining and augmenting cognitive health: Vitamin B6, Folate and Vitamin B12.
These B Vitamins have been shown to be able to stabilize homocysteine levels, which is a great ability, because high levels of homocysteine are found in patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s. A recent study illustrated how keeping these levels in balance could be an integral way of reducing the risk of developing these issues.

| The Cons |

While there is nothing wrong with the MegaMind formula if it’s used as a multivitamin, it does have many flaws as a cognitive enhancer. For instance, it seem to be relying upon Ginkgo to increase cerebral blood flow and cognitive health, but it has been shown in independent studies to have very minimal abilities in this arena. In fact, Vinpocetine would have been a more effective choice due to the fact it has done extremely well in studies showing its affect on both cerebral blood flow and memory.
They also rely upon DMAE to increase the body’s production of acetylcholine, a vital neurotransmitter that declines as we age. However, DMAE has been an inconsistent performer in research studies, where as Alpha GPC has done amazingly well in over 20 studies, in which it was shown to dramatically increase both short and long term memory.

The fact that MegaMind was created by Source Naturals is a big draw for many consumers, which is understandable, but when you look at its formula you start to see that it may not be as effective as its developer suggests. While it does contain elements to control homocysteine levels, it fails to use the best elements for enhancing cerebral blood flow, augmenting neurotransmitter communication or increasing levels of acetylcholine.
This was a glaring oversight, which seriously compromises its ability to produce results. Fortunately, there are few cutting edge formulas on the market that contain high performing elements like Vinpocetine and Alpha GPC, which can quickly and effectively get cognitive health back on track.
